Brexit explains that problem. Rishi Sunak is probably the most embroiled in Brexit. No previous prime minister was a Brexiteer. None of them always supported Brexit. Rishi Sunak alone. He is deeply involved in all that is wrong with Britain and the Conservative Party.
Brexit required Conservative Party candidates to pretend that leaving the EU would be good for the country, even if it wasn’t and couldn’t be. It would drastically reduce needed immigration. Trade would plummet. GDP would plummet. Inflation would rise. These things were inevitable. Tory MPs will never accept that since they believe Brexit was a good thing and will make Britain great.
Even if you’re an urbane technocrat like Rishi Sunak, you still have to believe in Brexit and base your government strategy on it. That produces severe interior incoherence. Brexit requires impossible beliefs. It’s still unworkable. Imports are unavailable. Food is unavailable. Labor is unavailable. No trade. Brexit is a major reason why nothing works in Britain.
It succeeded, but he’ll never be a decent prime minister. Because Brexit meant eliminating dissenters, Johnson left an indelible impression on the Conservative Party.
Right? Johnson struggled with his slender majority inherited from Theresa May. He struggled to pass legislation because Remain-supporting Tory backbenchers were asking sensible questions about how it would function.
He expelled them all from the Conservative Party, called a fresh election, won a huge majority of hardline Johnson-like Brexiteers, and then took off. That delivered Brexit, but it was bad.
Liz Truss replaced Johnson after many scandals. I heard that Truss’ leadership of the U.K., especially during this financial crisis, was Brexit-like. Magical thinking, right?
Faith-based. Brexit has no economic model.
I think he could come out and say, “Oops, this was a poor plan that made everything worse, so we should attempt to pull back some of it and start reentering the EU, being much more constructive, and signing some of the most fundamental trade agreements.”
But there is no way he could do that; the Conservative party would revolt immediately.
I’m curious if you believe there are lessons to be learned from the current situation in the United Kingdom, and if so, what those lessons are

I believe that far too many individuals have quickly drawn financial conclusions.
Particularly on the right.
I’m seeing a great deal of criticism stating, “The lesson of Britain is that we must exercise greater economic responsibility.”
Like, no.
The lesson of Britain is that a faith-based administration that begins with ideology rather than truth is impossible. I am concerned about the growing number of ideologues running for office in the United States.
If the biggest falsehood in the United Kingdom is that Brexit will be beneficial for the country, the comparable lie in the United States is that Donald Trump will win the 2020 presidential election.
Now, a vast majority of people are desperate to vote for anyone who would repeat this falsehood with a straight face.
Brexit began complicated. In 2016, then-Prime Minister David Cameron—who opposed Brexi —called a referendum, hoping voters would correct him.
Cameron led the Tory party when it was evenly split between proud Europeans and anti-Europeans, some of whom wanted to exit the EU totally. That rift made the Tory party unruly. Cameron called a referendum to definitively address the question.
So, people decide. It was a non-binding referendum. Cameron and the Tories considered it a binding referendum. The referendum appears to have bluffed the Brexiteers.

We’ll depart and see what you think. Now the predictable effects are happening. Cameron resigned after Brexit. After Brexit failed, Theresa May resigned in 2019.
Boris Johnson won.
He campaigned on “getting Brexit done,” not on its implications. Remember that Johnson is a cunning opportunist who wrote two columns for the Telegraph the day before he said he would fight for Brexit: one supporting Leave, the other supporting Remain.
He flipped a coin and opted to support Brexit to increase his chances of becoming prime minister.
Liz Truss suggested modified Reaganomics—unfunded tax cuts to boost economic growth. Most economists believed this spending would increase inflation. Markets reacted. She collapsed the bond market. Because everyone said: You’re going to have to borrow this much money, you’re borrowing a lot already, and you’re going to have to borrow even more because these tax cuts are growing the deficit.
It wasn’t mathematic.
After that, she resigned. Rishi Sunak can accomplish what?
The Tories are like Wile E. Coyote, running off the cliff but not falling.
They have two more years before calling an election with this strong Parliamentary majority.
They dominate the country despite minimal popular support. They would lose most seats in a general election tomorrow. To lead the Tory party is to lead a party facing death and ruin. It knows the next election will wipe it away.
Tories are trying to figure out how to minimise the harm of a large Conservative-to-Labour flip during the next two years. Honestly, not much—the harm is done. Is it truly impossible for Sunak to anticipate Brexit?
In a broader sense, I believe Brexit demonstrates that when two half of a country do not speak the same language and are entirely irreconcilable, it is a prescription for disaster at the governmental level in any democracy.
